Dominick's Brother, Edward, has just informed me of his application to you. To enter plental as Say Brother, also, that he intends asking permission to see Dominick, within the next fortnight. This is entirely against my wish. I told him not to do so. I don't want this to happen, as I know it would upset Dominick, who is happy. I will remain so, as long as he does not see Edward. - I hope you won't think I unkind of me by asking you to refuse both his requests. As regards to his vocation - I don't believe he has one, only a fancy for constant change. I always looking for something new. He left Roscrea, after a few weeks, re-entered I left. Again, he won't stay anywhere - I won't bend to deciplin - if he entered plental Priory - he would not stay there either. I think it my duty to let you know this, so that you will know how to reply to him. We are sending you a number of Draw Tickets in connection with the Bazaar which we are holding in the Monastery grounds on the 28th and 29th of next June.
We are sure that this appeal from Ireland's sole Benedictine Monastery will not be in vain for many reasons. Catholic Ireland would not think her ecclesiastical life complete without the possession of one of the Church's oldest Monastic institutions. What the Benedictines are doing in Monastic work in every nation of Europe we hope to do in Ireland. Throughout the world to-day the learning and culture of Benedictine Colleges and Schools are being highly appreciated and we intend that Ireland shall also participate in these. And above all our principal work, a work at present in progress, will appeal to you, and that is the training of the youth of Ireland in the study of Arts and Crafts. The gold and silver work of Ireland was universally known. This we hope to revive. At the present day a great amount of church furniture comes from abroad. We are training Irish boys to furnish Irish churches. Please God, our progress will open many opportunities to Irishmen, will keep Irishmen at home, and will bring back again to Erin the full glory of her arcient fame in her working of Arts and Crafts.
We are building a new Church to house Our Divine Master on an Irish hill. St. Benedict loved the hills, and from an Irish hill he appeals to you to-day to help his sons in their labour and work for Catholic Ireland.
We shall be grateful for any help you can give us towards making our work a success, and we shall not forget your charity in our prayers.
His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Harty, Archbishop of Cashel, has kindly consented to be patron, and has presented a valuable prize. We hope the headline given by his Grace will be an inspiration for all.

In answer to yours of the 13th vist., I beg to state that in my opinion the young man - Patrick Martin who has made application to you, is not suitable for Religious Life.
In 1931 he was a lay-brother postulant with me, but after some months advised him to return to the world, as he seemed incapable of realizing the seriousness of Religious responsibilities.
In many respects he was good & pious, but he was wanting in the vacance & common sense

which, to my mind, is essential in aspirants to the Religious life. He has applied to several other Religious Orders in Ireland, and apparently they have all refused to accept him.
I cannot recommend him to you, dear Rev Father, - because, - since he was not suitable or good enough for the Franciscans, he will not be good enough for the Benedictines.

Dear Dom Maffor,
I have received your letter
a day or two now and thanks for taking so much
trouble over particulars. I have been thinking of the
religious life a good which for about two years
or so. My reasons for being a Brother are spiritual.
I mish to serve God and lead a good life.
My health is good, and I enclose a health
certificate from the local doctor. There is no
ill-health or misombij in the family. I have no
debts and my parents don't need me. I attended
the primary schools to up the age of sixteen. I then
assisted about home and garding. I attended the
Ballymera Technical School and proved excaminations
in electricity. That comes the period between school-
days and now. I am at I am at present abtoning the
outfit, and will be pleased to hear from you
soon.

Dear Dom Maffer,
In reply to your letter of 15th inst. just received -- I was surprised to learn that Seumas McNamee had already taken some steps to enter religious life as he never approached me on the matter. I am pleased to know that he has that intention and I hope he will be able to carry it out.
He is an exceedingly good young man. During all the years that I have known him he has given ample evidence of sincere and fervent piety. He receives the Sacraments frequently and attends all devotions and instructions. I believe he would make a good religious.
So far as I know there is no insanity, consumption or an other serious illness in the family. I have never heard of any. The parents are not natives of this parish. Seumas has never been a postulant in a of or Religious Order.
As regards the respectability of the family I have the
following remarks to make: ---
The th until a few years ago was a principal teacher in the school at Waterfoot, Go Antrim (Parish of Bushendall). I have had no personal acquaintance of him, so far as I remember I have never spoken to him but I have seen him at Mass here when his school was on holidays. The mother and family resided here presumably to be near Ballymena for the higher education of the children. I have heard from other priests that the father is intemperate and he resigned his school before his time. He went off then to England and has been travelling about from one place to another. And so far as I know he sends no money to his family, spending it all on himself. All I can say of my personal knowledge of him is that I never knew him to miss Mass when here. He is no credit to his wife and family and from what I gathered from other priests associated with him he gave a lot of anxiety to the priests while he was teaching. I refer to his intemperate habits. For the rest I never heard anything against him. I feel bound to tell you this in a matter so important as the reception of a new member into your Order.
As regards the mother - she is an exceedingly devout and good Batholic and a lovely matter.

of the daughters is a teacher in one of my schools and is in every way a good batholic girl. In fact the children are a great credit to the mother. I have never had the slightest anxiety about any of them.
I believe Seumas would make a good lay brother. He is neat and tidy in his habits and is of studious disposition. It would be a great pity if the father's escapades interfered in any way with Seumas's prospects. You are the best judge about that. Personally I think he should be taken on his merits as I know him to be in every way a model batholic. I should have said that he has intelligence beyond the average and if he has grace to persevere he will not let you down in any way.
He has a sister in a French religious community. I have never met her. I shall be glad to give you any further information in my power. Meanwhile I hope that what I have said will be of some assistance to you. And while conscience compels me to say what I have said about the Father I hope it will not predictive Seumas's case unduly.

Since writing to you last I have been with the doctor. He gave me a thorough examination, and found my heart and lungs absolutely sound. He said my leg required no treatment whatever and ordered me no medicine of any description. I lost half store in weight but the doctor considered that not surprising seeing I was six weeks in bed. I am sure you will be very glad to hear such a good report, and I will let you know some months later how I am getting on.

Bernard Cafe spent four and a half years with us as Noice and Brother. He showed goodwill and earnestness in his duties and a conscientious devotion to his work and exercises. This vocation however, did not seem to be that of a Brother in our Society and accordingly he leaves us when his Temporary Cath to the Society expires.
We always found him upright, honest and sincere, and I trust he will be successful in finding his true vocation in another Society, as I believe he is suited to the religious life

Very Rev and Dear Father,
I have your kind letter re the application of Bernard Coyle for admission to you as a lay Brother. He was with us for four years - two of which were as a novitiate, and the last two as Member of the Society with temporary Oath of membership which has now expired.
As you may know, our Society is not a Religious Order, and hence the life of a Brother with us is necessarily a good deal different from that of strict Religious; and furthermore as we have only a very few Brothers we have no common novitiate for them, the individual being taken into the House where he is needed and being put at the ordinary work of a Brother during his period of Novitiate.
From the beginning Mr Coyle found that a difficulty - he seemed to require and desire a stricter and more religiously disciplined life, and I believe he would be happier in it and more satisfactory also. He was good in his ordinary work - very regular and painstaking, but he just didn't seem to get the spirit that was required to make him a success among us, and missing that, he was rather out of place. I would say that he was not the type of man who could reconcile in practice the liberties that are normal in a Society like ours, with the true spirit of Religious service, and the result was that his interior life was unsettled and he tended to revolve everything around self. Directed and safeguarded by the continuous helps of strict religious life I believe he would find his true vocation for only that could give him the disciplined mind that is rather required in his case.

In the circumstances it was desirable even in his own interests that he leave us, for he would not be happy in our life , and when his temporary membership expired we asked him to do so, but entirely without prejudice to his admission anywhere else.
I'm afraid I will not be able to manage an oral interview with you after Easter - I have to leave on Easter Monday to attend a Meeting in France and shall be away some weeks, I expect. Father McAndrew - Superior, African Missions, Kilcolgan C. Galway, was the Superior who came most in contact with Mr. Coyle and I am sure he will be pleased to give you any information concerning him.

I know you will be delighted to receive this little letter from me well dear Fr, I fell now completely better all I think I need now to make again as of old is the beautiful fresh air all the doctors here attendants & Nurses say it is a miracle I have got so well. they say it was constipating I neglected my lowels and didnt take medicine and there all the system got poisoned and it necessarily effected my head. they all here have done all that was possible for me but I am sure it is your good prayers which have done most to make me so few well, so you must ask the community - my dear Brothers to say one Hail. many lack that the good God has again made me so well so dear Fr you must forget to ask this prayer of Thanks - giving and also you must all say occasionally a little - prayer that I will not get any relief but each day that I may get better & better, please God. I was permitted to go to moly mass & Communion nearly every day for the past week I was in bed for nearly a week after I coming. but each day I was improving. fell the days very long. but as I got well my father mother, mother, attendants and nurses brought me sils of looks magnificent & papers I hope I will not be here as long as it would take me to read them. I have so many. I gave a lot to the other patients & some times when I am with the other inimates I read short from the looks for them sometimes we say the nosay or some other prayers together when brushing the floors or sitting in the wards and some of the poor patients who are not able to help themselves we who are well helps any day it is fine we are allowed out in the grounds then. any day it is fine we are allowed out in the war but it is raining a lot for the past few days and there was some thunder this morning. I suppose the boys will all back to school tomorrow. I would love to be there to see them come lack. as you were hoping for a good inverse in their numbers which will be well for the monastery and more especially for the little boys then they do not forget you all in dear a ti

The governers at the board passed me for to go out last week, & daddy took me home here on Saturday it is a great change for me from the Priory. but I suppose it is all Gods will, and as you said this ways are always love and mercy. Three or four days after I came into the Asylum I was well to go out. but when I was in I had to stop until after the board meeting which was in last week. god may turn up some position for me in
life which may be to my souls well being
I do not care to go back again to the shop bus-
iners as I failed so much in it in the past truly
I only found peace in the Priory, yet it seemed
strange that this break down should come to take
me out of it. I would like to be back again
or to enter someother religiousOrder or even to work
about some religious house if it is god's will
so again I leave myself wholly in your hands
god may turn up something for me through

anything or any kind of work, perhaps
Fr. Matthew or Miss Martin might know of
something suitable, & I just thought now of Fr.
Hayes, he is real good too sometime he comes

Dear Mother,
Just a few lines hoping that you are in the best of health and also that father and Bridie are too. I am sure you will be surprised and disappointed to hear that I am not content in Glenstal. I was of the opinion before I came to Glenstal that I would never be happy or content until I entered into Religious Life but I can plainly understand that you must have a true vocation to enable you to live out your life in a Religious Order and I have not one. As I would not put down my life to live in Glenstal it would be only useless for me to remain much longer in it so when you answer this letter will you please forward Postal Order for four shillings for my fare I will return home to Penagh on next Saturday November 4th. Whatever the people of Penagh will think I dont case as I know my mind better than anyone else and I also could never fit in to the life in Glenstal. I am not able for the old in the early mornings and as for any manual labour I have not the strength that I would require for it. I will now conclude this letter and I hope that you will give my kind regards and best wishes to all your fathers with out exceptions and welcomes.

Dear Rev. Fr.,
Just a few lines to let you know that I arrived safely home on Monday evening. I need not tell you that my parents and sister were rastonished when I arrived especially when they were not expecting me. I delivered your letter to the chemists in Linwick and I also posted the others for you. Although it is only two days since I left Glenstal I regret it but since I had not the strength which I would require to enable me to live the life of a bay-brother in the U.S.B. and as I was discontented it would have been useless for me to remain any longer in it. I can truthfully say that any person that enters the U.S.B. and has the health and strength and grace to persevere in it that there is no nicer life and it could not be situated in nicer surroundings. I enclose Postal Order for amount of cash which you so kindly lent me. I was not out since I came home I feel so rashed for staying so short in Glenstal to meet anyone but this feeling will wear off eventually and also even that I am at home I am not contented in fact I am never contented either at home or away. Give my best wishes to Fr. Prior and the rest of

I also always remember the Prior the G. community and you in my prayers and I hope that you will not forget to pray for my parents, sister, and myself's spiritual and temporal welfare. I will now conclude this letter and I hope that it finds you and the rest of the community enjoying the best of health as it leaves me.
